Description
The 1820 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - Large Date represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. The U.S. Mint produced 4.4 million examples, making this ranked 3rd of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 31% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Large Date, Small Date, and the 1820/19 overdate exist. Higher mintage year. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792.
