Description
The 1820 Capped Head to Left Half Eagle - Curl Base 2, Small Letters is a Gold Half Eagle produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Capped Head to Left Half Eagles 1813-1834 series. The U.S. Mint produced 263,806 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 33% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Multiple varieties including Curved Base 2 and Square Base 2. One of the more available early dates. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $7.9K to $55K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 8.75 grams, 25 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
