Description
Part of the Capped Bust Quarters 1815-1838 series, the 1820 Capped Bust Quarter - Small 0 is a quarter from the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 127,444, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 33% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Several Browning die varieties exist. Quarter production remained modest compared to the half dollar. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $166 to $12K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 6.74 grams, 27.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5328.
