Description
The 1818 Capped Head to Left Half Eagle represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the Capped Head to Left Half Eagles 1813-1834 series. With a mintage of 48,588, this is a less common issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 33% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a cap with curls of hair beneath and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. After a gap in production (1816-1817), half eagle coinage resumed with several die varieties, including the STATESOF error. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $7.4K to $63K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 8.75 grams, 25 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
