Description
Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1817 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - 13 Stars is part of the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. With a mintage of 3.9 million, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. The 15-Star and 13-Star obverse varieties exist. The 15-Star is a notable error reflecting miscounted stars. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $61 to $7.8K depending on grade and condition.
