Description
The Eccleston Medal, cataloged as Baker-85, is a bronze medal produced circa 1805 and associated with Thomas Webb. This piece belongs to the tradition of English-made Washington commemorative medals that were produced in the early nineteenth century for both the American and British markets. The Eccleston Medal features a portrait of Washington on the obverse rendered in the neoclassical style favored by English die-cutters of the period, with carefully modeled hair and drapery details. The reverse carries commemorative inscriptions and allegorical or symbolic imagery relating to Washington's life and legacy. Thomas Webb's involvement may indicate his role as either the commissioner, distributor, or die-cutter of the piece. The medal was produced during a period when Washington's death in December 1799 had generated renewed interest in memorial and commemorative pieces on both sides of the Atlantic. English manufacturers were particularly active in producing Washington medals during the first decade of the nineteenth century, capitalizing on the emotional response to Washington's passing and the growing American market for patriotic collectibles. The Eccleston Medal in bronze represents a substantial and well-made example of this memorial tradition.
