Description
Judd-33 is the legendary 1804 Plain 4 proof eagle struck in gold, one of the most storied coins in American numismatics. Despite bearing the date 1804, these coins were actually produced circa 1834-1835 at the Philadelphia Mint for inclusion in diplomatic presentation proof sets commissioned by the State Department as gifts for foreign rulers, including the King of Siam and the Sultan of Muscat. The obverse features Robert Scot's Capped Bust portrait of Liberty facing right with the "Plain 4" date, designated BD-2 in the Bass-Dannreuther reference and JD-1 in the John Dannreuther reference. The reverse displays the Heraldic Eagle design. Only four specimens were originally struck, and just three are known to numismatists today. The finest known example, graded PR65+ Deep Cameo by PCGS with CAC verification, set a world record when it sold in 2021 from the Bob Simpson Collection.
