Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1804 Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagle - 13 Star Reverse belongs to the Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagles 1796-1807 series. With a mintage of 500, this is an extremely rare issue — the scarcer of two mint variants, with 15% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a cloth cap (pileus) and the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath (through 1798) or a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM (1804-1807). The 13-Star and 14-Star reverse varieties reflect the addition of Ohio to the Union. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $8.7K to $40K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 4.37 grams, 20 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
