Description

A split die is visible on this 1803 Draped Bust half cent. A split die occurs when a die crack extends completely across the face of the die from rim to rim, effectively splitting the die into two or more pieces. The resulting raised line on the struck coin spans the full diameter of the coin. This die crack runs from between the "S" and "T" in "STATES" through the wreath, touching the top of the "F" in "HALF" and to the other rim between the "A" and "M" in "AMERICA." The 1803 Draped Bust half cent had a mintage of 97,900.
