1796 Draped Bust Large Cent (Reverse of 1797) Obverse Retained Cud and Die Clash

Description

A retained cud and die clash are visible on the obverse of this 1796 Draped Bust large cent of the Reverse of 1797 variety. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring elements of each die's design onto the opposing die. In this case, portions of the wreath can be seen clashed infront of Liberty's face. A retained cud occurs when a piece of the die breaks away but remains in the die, creating a filled area on the struck coin. In this case, the retained cud runs from rim to rim near the bottom of the coin, touching the bottom of Liberty's hair and running through the date. The 1796 Draped Bust cent is a transitional year that used both the old Reverse of 1795 and the newer Reverse of 1797 designs.
