Description
The 1796 Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagle - No Stars is a Gold Quarter Eagle minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Capped Bust to Right Quarter Eagles 1796-1807 series. With a mintage of 963, this is an extremely rare issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 69% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a cloth cap (pileus) and the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath (through 1798) or a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM (1804-1807). First year of the quarter eagle. The "No Stars" obverse is a famous rarity — stars were added to the obverse later in the year. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $67K to $1714K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 4.37 grams, 20 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7645.
