Description
The 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar is a dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Flowing Hair Dollars 1794-1795 series. With a mintage of 1,758, this is a rare issue. The obverse features Liberty facing right with flowing hair, surrounded by stars and the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath within a wreath. The first silver dollar struck by the United States — 1,758 pieces on October 15, 1794. A specimen sold for $10 million in 2013. Many were too weakly struck and returned for recoining. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $12908K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 27 grams, 40 mm in diameter, with a lettered: hundred cents one dollar or unit edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6851.
