Description
Listed as Breen-1170 and W-8500, this uniface copper token was issued circa 1790 by the First Presbyterian Church of Albany, New York, making it one of the few ecclesiastical numismatic issues in colonial and early American coinage. The obverse is inscribed "D CHURCH Penny" in three lines, where "D" stands for denarium, the Latin word for penny, placed above the word CHURCH. The reverse is intentionally blank, as the piece was struck from a single obverse die only. The Albany Church Penny exists in two varieties distinguished by the position of the "D" — this "D Above" variant places the letter above the word CHURCH, while the other positions it differently. Approximately 1,000 total tokens were minted across both varieties, but the D Above variant is dramatically rarer, with fewer than 10 examples known to survive. The First Presbyterian Church of Albany likely issued these tokens as communion tokens, church admission pieces, or charitable contribution receipts — a practice with precedents in Scottish Presbyterian tradition where metal tokens controlled access to communion services. Their issuance in Albany, New York's capital, during the early years of the federal republic documents the intersection of religious practice and numismatic production in late 18th-century America. The extreme rarity of the D Above variant — fewer than ten known — places it among the most elusive private and regional issues of the post-Revolutionary period.
