Description
A die clash is visible on this 1787 Fugio cent. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring elements of each die's design onto the opposing die. Clashing of the chain links can be seen on the obverse and lettering and portions of the pedestal are clashed in the top links on the reverse. The 1787 Fugio cent was the first coin authorized by the United States Congress under the Articles of Confederation, designed by Benjamin Franklin with the sundial and “Mind Your Business” motto on the obverse and a chain of 13 links on the reverse.
