(1781) Obv Cliche White Metal Medal Betts-593, Morgan At Cowpens
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Betts-593 obverse cliche in white metal is a thin uniface impression from the obverse die of the Daniel Morgan at Cowpens Comitia Americana medal. This fragile piece preserves Morgan's portrait as rendered by Augustin Dupre at the Paris Mint. The Battle of Cowpens on January 17, 1781, was Morgan's masterpiece -- a double-envelopment that destroyed Banastre Tarleton's feared British Legion and turned the tide of the Southern Campaign. The obverse cliche captures Morgan's features in delicate relief, providing an impression of the die work without the full thickness and weight of a standard medal striking. White metal cliches of Comitia Americana medals are important collector pieces and die study tools, preserving the details of dies that produced some of the finest medals in American numismatic history. Their fragile nature makes surviving examples in good condition genuinely scarce.
