(1779) White Metal Medal Betts-567, Obv Cliche
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Betts-567 obverse cliche in white metal is a thin uniface impression taken from the obverse die of the John Stewart at Stony Point Comitia Americana medal. Cliches (also spelled "clichs") are thin metal impressions, typically in tin or white metal, produced by striking a thin sheet of soft metal against a single die face. They were produced as die trials, proofs of the engraver's work, or collector pieces for those who wanted an impression of the design without the expense of a full medal striking. This obverse cliche preserves the portrait side of the Stewart medal in its delicate uniface format. White metal cliches are fragile and easily damaged, making surviving examples in good condition genuinely rare. They provide valuable evidence of the die state at the time of production and are prized by specialists in Revolutionary War medals.
Rarity Notes
White metal obverse cliche. Fragile uniface impression. Very scarce in collectible condition.
