(1761) Silver Medal Betts-501, Grove-K-52 Tasco Proclamation
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Betts-501 in silver is a proclamation medal from Tasco (Taxco), the famous silver-mining town in present-day Guerrero state, Mexico, cross-referenced as Grove-K-52. The silver composition is especially appropriate for a medal from Taxco, which was one of the richest silver-mining centers in colonial Mexico. Taxco's mines produced enormous quantities of silver that flowed through the colonial economy and funded the Spanish empire. The 1761 proclamation of Charles III in Taxco would have been a significant local event, with mine owners, merchants, and officials gathering to celebrate the new monarch whose policies would directly affect the mining industry. Provincial proclamation medals from mining towns are particularly prized by collectors for their connection to the silver economy that was the engine of Spanish colonial wealth.
Rarity Notes
Silver Taxco proclamation medal, Grove-K-52. Mining town provenance adds interest. Very scarce provincial issue.
