Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvi 20-II, is the third known reverse pairing for obverse die 20, following GG and HH. The triple pairing of obverse 20 is exceptional and indicates this particular portrait die was either especially attractive, especially durable, or controlled by a prolific workshop. Reverse die II (using double-I despite the single-I avoidance convention) continues the double-letter sequence. The three varieties sharing obverse 20 — GG, HH, and II — form a natural collecting group that illustrates die-sharing dynamics at their most developed. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal represents the deep end of the Vernon medal collecting pool, where specialized collectors pursue specific die pairings across a catalog that runs to hundreds of varieties. The PBvi 20-II variety's membership in a three-reverse obverse group makes it particularly interesting for die study and attribution research.
