Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBv 22-S, pairs obverse die 22 with reverse die S. The twenty-second portrait die in the PBv series is among the very highest recorded, and reverse S continues the progression through the alphabet. By this point in the production sequence, the Vernon medal market was well established, with regular buyers, established distribution networks, and a collecting culture that valued variety. The PBv 22-S combination represents the penultimate phase of portrait medal production, where die sinkers continued cutting new dies despite diminishing per-variety production volumes. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal is a scarce late-production variety that appeals to Vernon medal specialists assembling comprehensive die pairing collections. The S reverse may feature a particularly refined or distinctive Porto Bello design, as late-phase die sinkers sometimes compensated for smaller production runs with enhanced artistic quality.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Among the highest-numbered PBv die pairings, produced in small quantities.
